Currently Stitching: Another Fall Leaf Quilt
Share
Can you really have too many Fall quilts? Can you have too many Autumn decorations? If your answer is yes, this episode is not for you. If you never tire of this cozy pre-winter season and its associated color palette and activities, then keep reading!
Last week I made a couple seasonal table runners. They've been quilted and are ready to be bound! Well I'm getting ready to bind them. These are the strips sewn together and waiting to be ironed.
But instead of working on binding right now, today, working on a twin/ full sized quilt featuring leaf blocks! Originally the pattern uses two colors to make up these blocks. While it's beautiful that way, I decided to put together this collection of batik fabrics to use instead.
There's always a bit of a challenge when you alter a pattern because quilt math is hard. But I think it will be very worthwhile and satisfying when this comes one comes together.
Not to sound like a broken record, BUT, I always like to take my time and read through the instructions two or three times. Then I get started cutting all the pieces and laying them out in groups. For something with this many parts I label most if not all of them.
I'm making two of each color leaf. While I cannot share any of the measurements or instructions with you because it is not my pattern, I can certainly recommend this pattern! The cutting instructions for this pattern have been extensive and extremely clear! *applause*
Once I got all the pieces cut and labeled, I started laying out my blocks. All of the prep work paid off. The leaves came together so easy!

I've never made one with this many points or parts. And I'm just loving watching each one come together.
I'd like to compliment the instructions again. They also make wonderful recommendations on how to press your blocks. These are not coming out bulky at all, despite all the seams and points.
Seriously so thrilled with how each one is turning out.
I'd also like to mention again that I used batiks for this. They took pressing very well.
Once I got all the leaves put together, I got them up on the design wall, along with the setting triangles. Looks a little funny that way, but it's great to see them all completed.
Next I had to decide the color placement for the stripes. I wanted it to look like the leaves are cascading in color, and then hopefully coordinate the striped blocks with it.
However, as I was looking over the pattern, I realized that they have opposite colors coordinating. So I mixed and matched the colors and layout until I found an arrangement I liked.
I've only got a few left to put together and cut to size. But I'm taking a break to think it over before I sew all the rows together. I've moved the striped blocks about twenty times. I'll look at it again in the morning before I decide. Check back next week for the final layout!
And now, I'd like to pat myself on the back. I sewed all the little leftover trimmed triangles together into half square triangles. I also pressed AND trimmed them. Let me tell you, 'twas a chore. I haven't decided what to make with them yet *sigh* but I'm glad I didn't throw them out and I don't have to mess with them later.
Come back again to see what happens to these little blocks. PLUS I may move on from Autumn inspired to SPOOKY themed projects! Thanks for following along!
